We're just about midway through the harvest, and everything is going smoothly now. The wine press has been repaired, and we've been having perfect picking weather for the last 3 days - not too hot, not too cold, sunny and dry. We're keeping our fingers crossed that it holds out...
I'm often asked what exactly my role is during the harvest (apart from writing blog posts, that is). Besides keeping up with regular office work and cellar door sales (obviously we don't tell customers to stop buying champagne while we harvest) I'm responsible for recording the harvest and keeping track of accounts for outside grapes deliveries from third parties (more about this later). But even more importantly, I do all the "cuisine" for the men who work the press and tractors. I'm amazed to find myself, "the American girl" cooking up hot lunches of boeuf bourguignon, coq au vin, paupiettes de veau with mousse au chocolat, tarte aux poires and crème caramel for dessert - I've certainly come a long way from hot dogs and hamburgers..... bon appetit !
This is me in the "réfectoir" (harvest kitchen)
