worlds apart ? deux mondes?

Had a few minutes of free time today and was able to read some of the blog postings written by fellow champagne makers in the Marne, (brought to us curtesy of Alastyn), and was  struck to see that they seem to have had beautiful weather yesterday - quite a contrast to our miserable day of rain and thunderstorms ! While you may think that Champagne is one big "Appelation Controlée" - controlled growing area -  it is actually comprised of many different, separate areas, each with its own specific characteristics. The entire growing region covers 33,500 hectares (76 000 acres) and is split up into 4 wine producing districts, one of which is the Aube, where our village of Gyé Sur Seine is located. A vast plaine (called the "champagne pouilleuse") separates us from the Marne growing region, which is about 150 kms north of us. Which explains why they managed to escape the stormy weather.

P.S. - Today the weather was fine - no rain, not too hot - hope it lasts !

J'ai pris quelques instants ce matin pour lire les blogs des confrères dans la Marne, et ce qui m'a marqué c'était de voir qu'ils n'ont pas eu le mauvais temps hier qu'on a subi ici dans l'Aube. Il est vrai que la champagne est vaste : l'appellation couvre une surface de  33,500 hectares, avec 4 zones de production. Il y a 150 km entre notre village dans l'Aube et Epernay, séparé par la vaste plaine de "la champagne pouilleuse" - ce qui explique les différences climatiques.

P.S. - Aujourd'hui temps idéal pour la coupe - pas de pluie, du soleil, mais pas trop chaud. Que cela continue !
